Library cards are available for permanent residents/property owners in Stark, Billings, and Slope counties free of charge. For those living outside of our service area (within North Dakota), we offer a card for a $20 annual fee or $25 for a family. Temporary residents can obtain a limited use card with a non-refundable $20 annual fee.

$2.00 fee to replace lost cards
The quickest and easiest method for obtaining your library card is to simply come into the main library in Dickinson, one of our branches, or the Bookmobile with your current ID and proof of address. However, the Dickinson Area Public Library (DPL) has begun to issue cards to new patrons over the phone and through our catalog. These cards will expire 6 months from the date of registration. They will also be restricted to checking out 3 physical items at a time. New patrons will have full access to our electronic content.
Patrons will need to come to the library with proof of address and photo ID within the 6 month period to continue their library privileges. If a patron is outside our services areas, their rural fee will be due at that time. Once a new patron has confirmed their card and paid any fees if they are a rural patron, full library privileges will be activated and the usual expiration dates will be applied (five years for local patrons, 1 year for fee patrons.)
The DPL will provide new patrons with their card numbers over the phone or via email. This is temporary and specific to the current situation.
Cards may also be obtained for other family members as long as they are at least four years old. Each adult patron will be expected to come in person to verify their identity and place of residence and those of any children they obtained library cards for. Spouses cannot verify the information for each other, they must each verify their own information in person.
To obtain your new patron card, call 701-456-7700, or use the online registration process here.
The DPL is now FINE FREE! While the DPL is no longer charging fines on overdue materials, other fees (such as the cost of lost or damaged materials) still apply. Once an item is 30 days overdue, the item will be marked as lost and fees for the cost of the item and other costs incurred by the DPL will apply.
WiFi access is available on the main level/north end of the library. NO wireless printing is available.
Computers are available for patron and guest use. Usage is limited to 1 hour per day (unless approved for longer for educational use). Printing is permitted in black & white for 15 cents per page, 25 cents per page for color, and must be prepaid before printing.
Computer filtering is in place on all stations, thus some websites may be inaccessible. Inappropriate use of computers/internet in the library will result in a cancellation of usage privileges with a ban of one year. Public computer use is monitored by library staff.
